Small changes make a big difference.
Never underestimate the power of making small changes often.
This old story powerfully illustrates this truth. Once a pastor took an assignment at a new church. Excited about the worship program he wanted to launch, he decided to move the church piano from the left side of the platform to the right side. That evening, the members went into a fury! And the poor pastor nearly lost his job. Quietly in his heart he started looking for another church, thinking this is not the place for me. But for the time being, he repented of his error and promptly returned the piano to its traditional place on the left side of the platform.
A few years went by and the pastor, eventually took a position at another church.
Months later, the pastor returned to visit his former church for an anniversary, he was shocked to see the piano on the right side of the platform. More amazing still, the pastor who had moved it was still in one piece! “How did you manage to get that piano across the platform?” the former pastor asked incredulously. His successor smiled and shook his head, acknowledging the perils through which he had passed. Placing his hand on his colleague’s shoulder and leaning close to his ear, he answered in a whisper, “One . . . inch . . . at a time.”
This story presents a simple truth, people resist change but if you make small changes a little at a time, it can make a big difference in the long haul. That is true for groups of people and for individuals. Sometimes our flesh kicks and screams at the big changes we try to make. But if you treat your flesh like that old church and inch it along, eventually it will get with the program. Small changes all year-long add up to a big difference at the end of the year.
